Whole Life Insurance , as its name implies, provides permanent
insurance protection for the "whole of your life." The "face amount"
or death benefit of the
policy (the amount of
coverage specified) will be paid to the beneficiary upon the death of the insured,
regardless of when this occurs, as long as necessary premiums are paid. Premiums for whole
life may be level increasing, or decreasing. At some time in the life of this
type of plan you can reach a point where the policy can pay some of the premiums
internally.
Key Policy Features , for participating whole life policies, it
is also possible to offset premium payments. With this option, annual dividends are used
to purchase additional amounts of paid-up insurance (called "paid-up adds").
Once the paid-up adds are sufficient to cover the premium, they are surrendered each year
to pay for the premium. However if the policy does not perform well you may have to make
premium payments again.
The policy loan provision allows the policyholder to borrow against the cash value. The
interest charged on this loaned amount may be a fixed or variable
rate and is specified in the contract. This allows you to access the cash
values without a taxable event occurring under current tax laws.

The basis of insurance is the "risk of loss." In the case of life insurance, primarily the risk is the loss of earning power caused by the premature death of a family income earner. Disability during the client's earning years and a lack of money in old age, too, are risks. The financial consequences of a premature death can be devastating - and life insurance guarantees that money will be available, whenever the need arises.
Many healthy people - especially young people - postpone buying life insurance; they expect to live to a ripe old age. Then there are those who think they may not live a long life, or expect to be employed in hazardous work; they may be inclined to apply for large amounts of life insurance, because they expect that their beneficiaries may be able to collect on the policy soon!
No one expects to be able to buy fire insurance while watching their house burn. Likewise, if life insurers sold their product to the seriously sick, or other high risk people without carefully assessing the risk, the costs of their products would be prohibitive.
Depending upon individual circumstances, typically there are up to six financial needs that can be satisfied with the use of life insurance. These needs are disclosed through fact-finding interviews that the agent conducts with prospective clients. Known as "total needs planning," this process differs from "single need sales" , and from "estate planning" and "financial planning" approaches.

Term Versus
Whole Life Insurance
Term insurance , also
called temporary insurance, covers a person against death for a
limited time, the term. For example, the term might be until
children are grown, or until college is paid for, or until
retirement. You pay for the coverage period and at the end of the
term the contract, or policy, expires. If no claims are made
against the policy during the term, you don't receive any
benefits after the policy expires, just like auto or homeowners
insurance.
Whole Life insurance ,
also called permanent insurance, is permanent and does not expire
(assuming you continue to pay the premiums). It provides coverage
similar to term insurance, but it also provides an investment
vehicle. A portion of the premium goes toward insuring your life
while the other goes toward an investment account. This
investment account can be either an interest bearing account or a
stocks and bonds investment account.
Which is better (our
opinion)? Young families with large financial obligations are
usually better off with term life insurance. The substantially
lower premiums enable them to purchase sufficient coverage to
protect against loss of income. Any discretionary investment
funds can be placed in other vehicles (mutual funds, money market
accounts, etc.) that are likely to generate returns similar to or
better than life insurance contracts. Cash value insurance is
sometimes purchased by people for tax and estate planning
purposes. You should consult with your financial advisor.
Choosing an
Agent
Almost all life
insurance companies sell their products through agents, rather
than directly to the public. Some companies use
"captive" agents, who can only represent one company.
Most of the competitive term insurance providers (such as those
featured at this site) use independent agents, who are free to
represent several companies. These agents can help you
select from a variety of products and companies to tailor a plan.
The premium rate is set by the company, and it cannot be changed
by the agent. The price you pay for a given product will be the
same no matter where you buy it. "Price shopping" for
an agent will provide little benefit, assuming that you have the
basic product and pricing information to know what to ask for.
