If an American citizen becomes seriously ill or injured abroad, a U. S. consular officer can assist in
locating appropriate medical services and informing family or friends. If necessary, a consular
officer can also assist in the transfer of funds from the United States. However, payment of
hospital and other expenses is the responsibility of the traveler.
Before going abroad, learn what medical services your health insurance will cover overseas. If
your health insurance policy provides coverage outside the United States, REMEMBER to carry
both your insurance policy identity card as proof of such insurance and a claim form. Although
many health insurance companies will pay "customary and reasonable" hospital costs abroad, very
few will pay for your medical evacuation back to the United States. Medical evacuation can
easily cost $10,000 and up, depending on your location and medical condition.
THE SOCIAL SECURITY MEDICARE PROGRAM DOES NOT PROVIDE COVERAGE
FOR HOSPITAL OR MEDICAL COSTS OUTSIDE THE U.S.A.
Senior citizens may wish to contact the American Association of Retired Persons for information
about foreign medical care coverage with Medicare supplement plans.
To facilitate identification in case of an accident, complete the information page on the inside of
your passport providing the name, address and telephone number of someone to be contacted in
an emergency.
A traveler going abroad with any preexisting medical problems should carry a letter from the
attending physician, describing the medical condition and any prescription medications, including
the generic name of prescribed drugs. Any medications being carried overseas should be left in
their original containers and be clearly labeled. Travelers should check with the foreign embassy
of the country they are visiting to make sure any required medications are not considered to be
illegal narcotics.

and Prevention (CDC). This contains a global rundown of disease and immunization
advice and other health guidance, including risks in particular countries. For
additional health information, the CDC maintains the international travelers
hotline at 1-877-FYI-TRIP (1-877-394-8747), an automated faxback service at
1-888-CDC-FAXX (1-888-232-3299) and a home page on the Internet at http://www.cdc.gov .
For detailed information on physicians abroad, the authoritative reference is The Official ABMS Directory of
Board Certified Medical Specialists published for the American Board of Medical Specialists and its certifying
member boards. This publication should be available in your local library. U.S. embassies and
consulates abroad maintain lists of hospitals and physicians. Major credit card companies also can
provide the names of local doctors and hospitals abroad.
Some countries require foreign visitors to have inoculations or medical tests before entering.
Before traveling, check the latest entry requirements with the foreign embassy of the country to
be visited.
Several private organizations will provide medical information and insurance for overseas
travelers. Most charge a fee for this service. The following is provided FOR

Travel medical insurance is a type of product designed for persons traveling outside
of their home country for a temporary period of time. As an example, a family
traveling to Africa for two weeks would need travel insurance, so would a foreign national
visiting the United States for 7 months. Anyone who travels internationally with the

MEDICAL INSURANCE BENEFITS FOR PARTNERS' TRAVELERS

Through ABCO 100 insurance brokers and Connecticut General Life
Insurance Company, Partners of the Americas has arranged for medical insurance for all
international travelers, northbound and southbound, whose travel is funded by Partners of
the Americas and authorized through the Partners of the Americas travel grant application
process. Partners will pay the premium for medical coverage during the specified
Partners' business period of the trip. ABCO 100 is the insurance broker for Sister Cities
chapters, universities,and various other non-profit organizations involved in
people-to-people exchanges throughout the world.
Partners of the Americas will not be able to pay the premium or arrange for
medical insurance for Partner volunteers whose travel is self-funded or when the ticket is
purchased from another source other than Partners. However, self-funded self-ticketed or
non-international travelers will have the opportunity to contact the same insurance
carrier to obtain and pay for the same coverage at the same rate on their own by filling
out an enrollment form and sending it along with a check for the premium directly to ABCO
100.
Partners of the Americas will also not be able to pay the premium or arrange for medical
insurance for any personal portions of a traveler's itinerary. However, Partners will
enroll the traveler in the insurance plan for the full travel period (including the
personal portion), but the traveler will be responsible for the premium costs of the
personal portion of his/her itinerary. The traveler with personal travel included in
his/her itinerary must: include a check along with the travel grant application, made out
to Partners of the Americas, to cover the personal portion of the itinerary ($10.00 per
week, minimum) or deduct the premium cost from his/her expense reimbursement.
Partners sponsored international travelers whose travel is authorized after July 21,
1997 will be eligible for this coverage. If for any reason this new policy of providing
medical insurance to Partners-sponsored travelers should change, we will advise the
partnership presidents/chairpersons immediately.
How it will work
Volunteers whose international travel is funded by Partners and is issued an airline
ticket through Partners will be enrolled in this plan. Once a traveler's completed travel
grant application has been approved by Partners and the airline tickets have been issued,
Partners will notify the insurance carrier and will then pay the premium for medical
coverage during the specified Partners' business period of the individual's travel.
An identification card and claim forms will be mailed to the traveler upon enrollment.
Once a traveler is enrolled under the policy, no substitutions will be permitted.
The costs for this coverage will come out of the specific grant that is funding the
travel. The weekly premium is $10.00. In order to obtain this premium, Partners has agreed
to enroll all Partners' authorized international travelers whether or not the traveler is
covered through a personal policy.
Claims Reimbursement: The exact method of reimbursement depends upon the provider. In
the event of injury or sickness, the insured should show the insurance identification card
to the provider of medical service. In many instances, the provider will then bill the
carrier and not require payment. However, in some instances, the provider will require
payment and the insured will be reimbursed by the carrier. This is at the discretion of

Partners of the Americas is not part of the claims submission or collection process.
Each traveler will communicate directly with the insurance company regarding claims.
Chapters should keep a supply of the health insurance brochures on hand in the event one
is not received by the traveler before departure, and enrollment forms for those
self-funded travelers who may want to obtain and pay for this coverage on their own.
Additional copies are available through your partnership representative.
Benefits of this Policy
· Medical: $50 deductible, 100% up to $50,000
· Medical Evacuation and
Repatriation: Up to $50,000
(If injury or sickness commencing during the period of coverage results in death,
all reasonable expenses incurred for preparation and return of the remains to the country
of residence will be paid up to this maximum)
· Accidental Death and Dismemberment: $10,000.
