Why Do I Need Travel Insurance?
Whether
or not to buy travel insurance has become less important than
it once was due to bankruptcies of airlines and tour operators,
non-refundable air fares, health factors and natural disasters
like earthquakes and hurricanes. Insurance plans may be comprehensive,
while others can allow you to buy a specific types of cover.
What Needs To Be Covered?
Your
travel insurance policy should cover:
medical
expenses
personal
liability
cancellation
and curtailment
loss
of baggage and theft.
The
most important parts of the cover are the medical expenses
to cover the cost of any emergency medical treatment you may
require, and personal liability - this covers you in the event
that you're faced with a bill for any damage or injury
you cause to anyone else or their property while you are on
holiday abroad. You should also have insurance cover to pay
out a lump sum if you're injured or if you die while
abroad. The amount of insurance for each of these categories
obviously differs from policy to policy, usually the cheaper
the policy, the lower the cover. It may also be worthwhile
choosing a policy which offers an international helpline,
especially if you are going to a country where English is
not a frequently spoken language.
Types of Policy
Who
Is Covered?
Individual
This is cover for you, personally. It is not compulsory to
buy travel insurance from your tour operator - if they
claim you have to buy their insurance in order to qualify
for discounted holidays, you should report them to your local
trading standards office.
Couple
If you take out travel insurance as a couple, make sure you
are covered if you travel independently of each other.
Family
If you have children, family cover may be better value -
but watch out for the number of children allowed on the policy.
Also check if your children are covered if they travel independently
from you.
Business
If you go away on business trips on a regular basis, make
sure you are covered - many policies exclude business
travel.
Policy Types
Annual
If you travel more than twice a year, it is probably cheaper,
and definitely more convenient, to take out an annual travel
insurance.
Most
policies will specify the maximum length of each trip (usually
31 days), so make sure you check the small print and find
a policy with flexible rating if your trips are going to be
longer.
Annual
policies will generally cover winter sports for a duration,
but may not include scuba diving.
Single
Trip
Policies are available for trips up to a specified duration.
Cover for winter sports will usually mean a higher premium.
Backpacker/Longstay
Policies are available for students who decide to go on
a backpacking holiday, and those lucky enough to be taking
a longstay holiday. These policies often cover working abroad,
but check the small print.
WinterSports
Policies do not always cover wintersports, so extra cover
will be necessary. Check your policy to make sure that your
chosen winter or dangerous sport is covered.
Areas of Travel
The
cost of your travel insurance will vary according to the area
of the world you intend to travel to. If you're only
going to be travelling within the UK you are unlikely to need
holiday insurance, exception possibly cancellation cover in
case you need to cancel a prebooked holiday. Otherwise, policies
usually offer European cover (check for exceptions), or worldwide
cover. If choosing Worldwide cover, make sure your policy
includes the USA and Canada, if required.
Form
E111
If you are a national of the UK or of a European Community
country, or Austria, Finland, Iceland, Norway or Sweden, and
are travelling in those countries, you should obtain a E111
certificate and take it with you when you travel.
The
certificate entitles you to state emergency treatment in those
countries, though you may still have to pay some additional
charges. It is not a substitute for medical travel insurance
which gives far wider cover. Most insurers may not give a
discount if you have E111, but it does help to keep the level
of premiums down.
In
the UK, Application forms for E111 are available from Post
Offices.
Things To
Take With You
When
you are travelling abroad you should remember to take your
passport and tickets, together with any visas or entry permits
and, where necessary, vaccination certificates. You should
also have a copy of your travel insurance policy with you.
If you're taking your own car abroad or are likely to
be hiring a vehicle you should take an International Drivers
Licence and your motor insurance certificate green card. If
you are taking your own car you should also have a copy of
your car registration document. Finally, don't forget to take
your travellers' cheques, foreign currency, credit cards and,
for the last stage of the trip, some Sterling.
Exclusions
Most
insurance companies will not give you a quote if you can answer
'yes' to any of these questions:
Have
you or any of the other people to be named on the policy
ever been refused travel insurance or had any terms imposed?
Have
you or any of the other people to be named on the policy
suffered from any serious or recurring illness?
Are
you or any of the other people to be named on the policy
aware of any reason why a planned holiday will be cancelled
or cut short?
Are
any personal or family trips for business purposes?
Is
there anyone on whom your journey depends (whether travelling
or not) who suffers from any chronic or recurring illness
which may lead you to cancel or cut short your holiday?
Are
you are resident in the UK?
Some
policies also exclude those people aged over 65.
In
these circumstances, specialist insurance may be available,
but will come at a higher premium.

When you're going on holiday, don't forget to insure yourself against
all the things that can go wrong. If you're travelling overseas, health
insurance is a top priority, and then there's covering yourself for lost
or damaged luggage, theft of valuables and cash.
Most people booking an overseas package holiday take the easy way out
and automatically sign up with the travel insurance offered by the agent
or the tour operator at the time they make the booking. Simple, straightforward,
no fuss. But now since the last Budget changed the tax rules, it really
does pay to go separately to an insurance consultancy or broker for your
travel insurance.
From 1 April 1997, the Government's standard rate tax on insurance (Insurance
Premium Tax) rose to 4 per cent . But, in addition, there's a new higher
rate of 17.5 per cent which will apply specifically to insurance if it
is sold by travel agents and tour operators, as part of a holiday package,
as well as companies which sell, hire or rent vehicles.
If you pop into your local insurance
consultancy or broker, they will be able to sell you an identical -
if not better - travel policy with carries just 4 per cent tax - quite
a saving for a family of four going on a two-week holiday. Above all, a
good insurance independent will offer you a choice of travel policies so
you can pick one which suits you.
One organisation which specialises in travel insurance, as well as motor
and household policies, is Coversure Insurance Services, which has more
than 40 local branches
throughout the country
"The truth is that most people just sign on the dotted line and
don't bother to read the small print of travel insurance policies,"
says marketing co-ordinator Nigel
Taylor . "It's only when they come to make a claim that they realise
that some policies are much better than others."
Coversure has its own Travel Protection Plan which offers good value-for-money
for holidaymakers with premiums ranging from £12 to £20 per
person for a week in Europe, depending on the choice of three types of
cover. The cheapest includes £1 million of medical and other expenses,
personal accident and £500 holiday cancellation and curtailment,
but does not cover personal baggage or lost money or documents.
Another policy recommended by Coversure is TravelCare

one of the leading specialists in the field. This provides a range of options
and is ideal for the traveller who wants extra cover. For example, it includes
SkiCare cover for the winter sports enthusiast. It pays to read the small
print of any travel insurance which you are offered.
Some companies are far more generous than others when it comes to deciding
what reasons they will accept for you having to cancel your holiday. This
is particularly important if you are self-employed or have a job which
may involve you in having to cancel your holiday because of business emergencies.
Look at the section which explains what happens if you lose your money
or documents. The sums insurance companies cover vary quite considerably,
as do the terms and conditions. Some policies are tougher then others at
paying out for cash, even if you carry it on your person. Another area
to check is the section about how far you are covered if you are delayed
getting to either your departing or returning airport.
Some travel policies are quite restrictive and only pay out if you can
prove that "public transport" let you down (no mention of what
happens if your own, or a hire car, breaks down, or is involved in an accident).

complete our medical questionnaire. Your medical information will help

to 30 days in duration, taken during a one-year period. It comes with

Baggage & Personal Effects
This insurance can mean the difference between a wonderful holiday and
an expensive misadventure. It provides protection from loss or damage
to personal effects caused by theft, burglary, and fire or transportation
hazards, anywhere in the world.
Flight Accident Insurance
This insurance covers you while on airport premises, travelling on scheduled
helicopter shuttles, in airport buses and limousines authorized by the
carrier or airport authority, as well as during the scheduled flight.
Rental Car Physical Damage
This plan offers worldwide coverage and provides up to $50,000 collision
damage insurance. In the event of an accident or damage to your rental

There are five policies to choose from, between them providing
cover for a range of leisure, hill walking, climbing, and
mountaineering activities. Apart from Travel ,
each policy covers a range of other sports.
Simply choose the policy below which covers your activities

Travel
For Individuals or BMC Family Members who are not
participating in any sport but require basic medical, travel
and baggage cover .
Trek
All Travel activities are covered plus :
hillwalking, trekking, backpacking and easy scrambles including
via ferrata and trekking routes.
Rock
All Trek activities are covered plus: abseiling,
sport climbing, bouldering and climbing with leader placed
protection.
Alpine
& Ski
All Rock activities are covered plus: winter sports
including all forms of skiing and snow and ice climbing
in alpine mountains and on non- Expedition peaks up
to 6500m
Expedition
All Alpine & Ski activities
are covered plus: climbs and expeditions to remote, difficult
and high-altitude peaks anywhere in the world.

Travellers aged 66 and over
There is no age
limit on BMC insurance. Premiums for travellers aged 66 and
over are increased by only 70% of standard rates.
Families and Children
Children under
2 years old are covered free with an insured adult. Premiums
for children aged 2 to 15 (inclusive) at time of travel and
travelling with the insured adult can be covered for the following
discounted rates: Travel 50% premium discount, Trek 33% premium
discount, Rock full premium, Alpine & Ski full premium,
Expedition full premium.
Family rate
For 2.5x any selected
policy premium, the benefits of that policy will be extended
to cover two adults and two of their children (up to 15 years
inclusive).
