System of Texas announced health insurance selections today and approved
premium increases well below national average without reducing any

January 1, 2002, eligible state employees may purchase additional ERS service credit
to advance
their earliest retirement eligibility date and increase the value of their
standard annuity upon retirement. Called Additional Service Credit
(ASC) ,
this credit purchase option allows up to five years of additional service

Thurgood Marshall School of Law student Anthony Robinson never wanted to be a "poster child" -- he just wanted to clear his name. Andersen Defense Dealt Setback, as Judge Grants Motion to Quash Subpoenas

Defense attorney Russell Hardin has been having a tough time with U.S. District Judge Melinda Harmon in Houston during Arthur Andersen's obstruction of justice trial. Harmon has sustained many of the prosecution's objections to Hardin's questions, and on Friday she granted a motion to quash subpoenas seeking notes between the prosecution's star witness, David Duncan -- who may take the stand today -- and his lawyers.

Some Banks Agree to Waive Service Fees on IOLTA Accounts

Service fees that some banks charge to the Interest on Lawyers' Trust Accounts program gobble up revenue that could provide free civil legal services for low-income Texans. "It's eating up $1 million in funds that otherwise would have been available for legal services to the poor," says Richard Tate, chairman of the Texas Equal Access to Justice Foundation, which administers the IOLTA program.
IOLTA generated $5.6 million in 2001, down from $6.4 million in the previous year, the foundation reports.

N.Y. Attorney General Urges Panel to Reinstate Gun Suit

Arguing his first case since being elected New York's attorney general in 1998, Eliot L. Spitzer urged a panel of appellate judges Friday to reinstate a novel lawsuit against the gun industry. The suit alleges that gun manufacturers and wholesalers are liable for contributing to a public nuisance -- namely, handguns that are illegally possessed and used -- because of the way they market and sell their products.

Sonnenschein Set to Acquire New York's RubinBaum

Chicago's Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal is expected to announce today its acquisition of New York's RubinBaum, adding between 50 and 55 lawyers to Sonnenschein Nath's 80-lawyer New York office. RubinBaum's litigation and transactional practices, as well as its entertainment and IP groups, are considered strong additions to Sonnenschein Nath. The move follows a trend of larger Chicago firms acquiring small and midsize New York firms.

Eleventh-Hour Claims in Olympics Bombing Rejected

For the third time, a Georgia judge has ruled in favor of the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games on claims involving the 1996 Centennial Olympic Park bombing. In a May 8 order, the judge granted summary judgment to ACOG in two suits filed on behalf of the estate of a woman killed and others who were injured in the blast. At issue was whether state law insulated ACOG from liability related to the bombing.

Miami Resort Ordered to Pay Fired Cook $1.5M

A chef at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa in Miami, who claimed she was harassed and assaulted by two male workers while supervisors looked the other way before eventually firing her, has been awarded $1.5 million in damages. A jury found that Nisaratana Russell was subjected to an abusive and hostile work environment, and that the spa retaliated against her for her complaints of harassment.
