Finance - University of North Texas
Career
potential
Professionals in finance use their expertise in accounting, economics, mathematics and statistics to help business professionals throughout the world manage their money wisely.
By choosing to study finance, you may become a budget analyst for a business, a government agency or a nonprofit organization. You may provide advice and technical assistance in preparing annual budgets and monitoring the operating
budget.
Or you may be a financial manager for a business, a government agency or an organization. Financial managers include comptrollers, who oversee the preparation of financial statements and supervise accountants, and cash managers, who control the flow of cash receipts to meet the financial needs of the company.
You may become a financial planner, working for a bank, an insurance company, a mutual funds company or a brokerage house, or in your own private practice to help people make investments and plan college or retirement funds. Or you may work for a brokerage house as a stockbroker, buying and selling financial shares of companies for
clients.
Study in finance could also prepare you for a career in bank administration and management. To become an administrator or executive of a bank, you may need to earn a master of business administration degree. About 25 percent of UNT finance students enter graduate school. A bachelor's degree in finance would prepare you for a master's program in accounting, economics, finance, insurance, law, marketing or real
estate.
With a bachelor's degree in finance you would also be prepared to start and own your own business. UNT's finance alumni include executive vice presidents of major banks and brokerage
houses.
UNT's Career Opportunities Center can help you prepare to pursue your career. The center has information about jobs and employers. It assists with resume and letter writing, job search strategies and interview
preparation.
Finance
The College of Business Administration is accredited by the AACSB — The International Association for Management Education [600 Emerson Road, Suite 300, St. Louis, Mo. 63141-6762, telephone (314) 872-8481]. It has passed strict academic standards for excellence in
education.
UNT offers a bachelor of business administration degree with a professional field in finance and also offers a career track option in financial
planning.
The finance program includes professional field electives in investments, financial institutions, risk management, real estate finance and corporate law. While studying in any of these areas, you may take courses in financial decisions, international financial systems and foreign exchange, investments, liquidity and working capital management, and the U.S. banking system. You also may study corporation law and risk management, employee benefit programs, life insurance, management of financial institutions, and real estate
investments.
The career track option in financial planning will include many of the same courses, but it is highly specialized and specifically tailored for students interested in joining (or starting) a financial planning
firm.
Either way, the finance program at UNT is designed to give you a good theoretical base as well as practical, applicable knowledge that can be used immediately in
business.
Most of the faculty members in the Department of Finance, Insurance, Real Estate and Law — the department from which you will receive your degree — have business experience in the area they teach. They are dedicated teachers and recognized scholars. Three faculty members were named Regents Professors for outstanding teaching and research; Regents Professors devote at least half of their teaching load to introductory-level courses. Other professors have won a number of teaching awards and written books in the field.
The department offers a variety of competitive scholarships for all full-time students who have completed at least 24 hours at UNT, have a high overall grade point average and can demonstrate financial need. Additional scholarships specifically designated for finance students are also available.
UNT's chapter of the Financial Management Association sponsors social events as well as career nights with guest speakers and an annual corporate field trip. You can meet leaders in
the Dallas-Fort Worth business community through this organization.
Getting
hands-on experience
As a finance student, you may earn course credit while working as an intern in the field. The faculty will work with you to find an internship. Interested finance students should contact the department for specific information. Upon completion of 12 semester hours at UNT with at least a 2.5 GPA, you may work in a job related to your field through
UNT's office of Cooperative Education. You may earn academic credit and money for your college expenses while gaining valuable work experience. Co-op employers pay extremely well, and the jobs usually last several semesters, often until graduation. More than 800 employers work with the office to provide excellent learning opportunities, many of which become permanent full-time positions upon graduation. Cooperative Education also assists with placing students in internships, which last for one full semester or
summer.
How to prepare before you
come to UNT
To prepare for college course work, we suggest that high school students complete four years of English, math and social science, including economics, geography, government and history; three years of science and foreign language; and one year of fine arts courses, among other subjects. You also should become proficient in using computers. To prepare for study in finance, take advanced courses in math and English. You also should take courses in accounting and
speech.
At UNT, you will need to take courses in most of these subjects under the university core curriculum required of all undergraduates, in addition to taking courses in your field. You may declare your intention to study finance immediately upon enrolling at
UNT.
Charting your path with
academic advising
Full-time staff advisers in the College of Business Administration will help you plan your schedule of classes each semester and select courses you will need to earn your degree. In addition, the faculty member who is the student adviser for the Department of Finance, Insurance, Real Estate and Law can assist you and provide career
advice.
The College of Business Administration's academic advising office is in the Business Administration Building, Room 123. The Department of Finance, Insurance, Real Estate and Law office is in Room
177.
