Temporary or interim health insurance is meant to
bridge the gap between insurance plans. It can be for as long as one year. It is easy
to obtain, and has lenient underwriting guidelines compared to other
types of insurance plans that are available. Also, it is usually less expensive
than permanent health insurance. This is because temporary / interim insurance
does not cover any pre-existing or current medical conditions. Only
subsequent health conditions would be covered under this type of plan. It should
not be viewed as a replacement for permanent health insurance, rather, a
useful alternative for a "Temporary" situation. These plans can
bridge the gap between permanent plans such as between jobs, waiting for
Medicare, in place of COBRA, etc. In some cases temporary health insurance
is the only plan available or affordable.

Compensation Memo 2001-09 . FEHB coverage is discussed in item 7 of Attachment 1 to that letter.
