Rental car insurance simplified
To buy a collision damage waiver or not is sometimes a baffling decision for
many travelers at the rental car counter. The collision damage waiver (CDW)
covers the cost of damages to the rental car if you are involved in an
accident. However, it is not insurance -- it is simply a provision of your
rental agreement that addresses your liability for damages to the car.
So before you shell out the extra cash for this waiver, the Western Insurance
Information Service (WIIS) suggests that you follow these guidelines to make
the right decision:
Check your existing auto insurance

policy
Review your auto insurance policy or call your insurance agent before you rent
a car. You don't want to pay extra money for coverages you already have. Most
auto insurance policies will provide liability insurance if you injure someone
in an accident. However, damages to the rental car are only covered under your
policy's comprehensive and collision coverage. Make sure your auto policy
includes this type of coverage.
Check your credit cards
In some cases, your credit card will pay for damages to a rental car in the
event of an accident. To be eligible, you probably would have to decline the
collision damage waiver as well as charge the full amount of the rental car on
your card. Make sure your credit card offers these services. Also make sure
you understand all limitations and exclusions your credit card may issue such
as limited rental contracts and approved rental dealers.
You may need to buy the CDW You can safely decline the collision damage waiver if you're absolutely sure
your auto insurance or credit card applies. However, buying the collision
damage waiver could be the answer for some travelers. Here are the reasons
why:
If you aren't covered under your own insurance or credit card then you may
consider purchasing the collision damage waiver. It's a better option to pay
about $8 to $11 a day than $15,000 to $20,000 to replace the rental car.
The collision damage waiver pays for "loss of use." This is what the rental
car company charges you for the money and time it lost since the vehicle could
not be rented. Most states do not cover loss of use under an auto insurance
policy. The exceptions are: Alaska, Connecticut, Louisiana, Minnesota, North
Dakota, New York, Rhode Island and Texas.
If you are involved in an accident, some rental car companies want payment
upfront, meaning you'll have to wait to be reimbursed from your own insurance
company. This is an expensive price to pay for some travelers, therefore some
may just opt to pay the extra price for the collision damage waiver.

European Rental-Car Insurance
In Italy, a
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is mandatory for rental cars.
by Durant Imboden
W hen you
rent a car in Europe, liability insurance is normally included in the rate. Fire
and theft insurance may also be included, but it's always a good idea to ask.
What typically isn't included is insurance against collision damage.
To protect yourself against having to pay for car repairs (or even a brand-new
car) in the event of an accident, you need a Collision Damage Waiver or
"CDW." This is available from three sources:
Rental agencies
The rental agent will offer you a Collision Damage Waiver when you pick up
your car. In a few countries, such as Italy, you may be required to take the CDW.
The cost isn't cheap--typically 10 to 25 U.S. dollars or Euros per day--but
buying it from the rental-car firm is simple and offers peace of mind. You may
also want to inquire about theft insurance , (LDW), which is usually
mandatory with Italian car rentals but is optional in most countries.
Credit-card companies
Some credit-card companies provide free collision insurance for rentals
charged on their Gold or Platinum cards. Unfortunately, the coverage isn't
always as good as it seems, and many card issuers no longer protect overseas
travelers or limit their protection to cheaper cars.
To make matters worse, you may be required to authorize a deposit on your
credit card up to the replacement cost of the vehicle, which isn't very
practical if the car's value is more than your credit-card limit. If you get
into an accident, you'll normally have to settle up with the rental firm, then
seek reimbursement from the credit-card company after you get home.

insure.com - auto insurance - The basics of rental car insurance
The basics of rental car insurance
By insure.com
What's in a name? Rental car insurance by any name will cover you just the same. Whether you buy it from the rental car agency or use your own insurance, you'll be protected from having to pay costly repair bills if you damage the rental company's property. However, there are some intricacies of rental car insurance of which you should be aware in order to make an informed purchasing decision.
Your insurance vs. the rental car company's
Your auto insurance
Your own collision coverage is "excess" to any other coverage.
Your collision insurance coverage in your personal auto insurance policy will likely cover damage you cause to any car that you're driving - including a rental car. However, many auto insurance policies say that your own collision insurance is "excess" to any other coverage, meaning that any coverage you buy from the rental car company kicks in first. In addition, your own collision insurance requires you to pay a deductible before the insurance company picks up the tab.
Your comprehensive coverage will likely apply to any rental car you drive and cover fire, theft, vandalism, or animal collisions. Again, your personal comprehensive coverage is excess coverage and is subject to your deductible.
If you cause an accident, your liability insurance will pay for the damages you cause to someone else, plus any medical expenses that arise from your negligence. Your liability insurance will cover you up to the limits of your policy, and if you were driving a rental at the time of the accident, your personal auto liability insurance, like your comprehensive and collision, will likely be excess coverage.
Rental car company's insurance
Rental car companies such as Alamo, Avis, Enterprise, and Hertz offer various types of insurance and waivers that broaden your liability protection and that can relieve you of the responsibility of paying for a wrecked rental.
Loss damage waivers (LDW) and collision damage waivers (CDW) from the rental company essentially take the place of your own collision and comprehensive insurance, letting you off the hook if the rental is stolen or vandalized, or if you crash the rental car company's vehicle. Some LDWs include the CDW, and some waivers require you to pay a deductible, just like your comprehensive and collision insurance.
Alamo, Avis, Enterprise, and Hertz insist that the waivers are not insurance. (In order for these to be true insurance, you have to purchase them through an insurance company. This option is not underwritten or sold by an insurance company, but it's the rental car company's version of comprehensive and collision insurance.) Cost: between $7 and $25 per day, depending on the rental car company and what kind of car you rent.
Alamo, Enterprise, and Hertz offer liability insurance supplements that will cover you for up to $1 million if you cause an accident, damage property, or injure others. This coverage has a "combined single limit," meaning the insurer will pay no more than $1 million for bodily injury and property damages. If you purchase this insurance from the rental car company, it becomes your primary liability insurance. Your own personal auto liability insurance is, again, relegated to excess-coverage status. Cost: between $7 and $15 per day, depending on where you rent.
You can also purchase accidental death and personal property insurance from your rental car company. Enterprise, for example, provides Personal Accident Insurance (PAI), which pays out a death benefit of $100,000 for the driver of the rental vehicle, whether you're in or out of the car. For example, if you slip in the bathtub and die during the time you're renting the car, the accidental death benefit pays out. It also provides a $10,000 death benefit for passengers who are killed while in the rental. Further, the PAI will pay for up to $3,500 in medical expenses for both you and your passengers. Cost: between $1 and $5 per day, depending on the rental car company.
Alamo, Enterprise, and Hertz also offer "limited" coverage for your personal property that might get stolen out of the rental vehicle.
To buy or not to buy
Making sense (and cents) out of all the coverages you already have on your auto insurance and the ones that are offered by the rental companies is not easy. Buying all of the insurance offered from a rental car company can double your rental costs. Buying none of it might put you in a bad financial spot if you have an accident. Here are some factors to keep in mind.
If you don't have your own collision coverage, buying the LDW is a good idea.
If you don't have collision and comprehensive insurance and you're renting a car, it's a good idea to purchase the LDW or CDW, whichever your rental company offers. You might want to buy the waiver that offers you the broadest protection in this situation. Rental companies have several levels of damage waivers. For example, Alamo provides three levels of coverage: you're not responsible for any damage; you're responsible for damage that exceeds $500; you're responsible for damage that exceeds $3,000.
Of course, the broader the coverage, the more you're going to pay. Enterprise's partial CDW, for example, requires you to pay a deductible (which varies by state). That costs $6.99 per day. Enterprise's full CDW costs $16.99 per day, but you aren't responsible for paying a deductible. All of Hertz's LDWs are deductible-free.
You might eschew the LDW altogether if you have collision and comprehensive coverage because you'd be paying for "double coverage." Just remember that you have to cough up your deductible if the car is stolen or vandalized, or if you crash it.
You who don't own cars will likely find the supplemental liability insurance offered by the rental companies valuable if you don't already have a nonowners auto insurance policy (For more, see No car, no problem .) The cost compared to the coverage is pretty good, but keep this in mind: Most states require the rental companies to automatically provide at least the minimum required liability coverage at no charge to you.
In this situation, you won't have to purchase any insurance from the rental company to get some liability coverage. If you feel that you can get by with just the bare-bones policy, you won't spend a dime on liability insurance. (For more, click to your state's minimum auto liability requirements .)
Got your own liability insurance? In this scenario, it will generally kick in first if you cause an accident. And remember, there's no deductible for liability insurance.
Rental car company offerings of accidental death and personal property insurance give you needless "double coverage" if you already have health, homeowners or renters, and life insurance. Typically, your health insurance (or auto insurance if you have MedPay ) will kick in for your medical costs, regardless of what car you're driving. Your homeowners or renters policy normally covers personal property if it's stolen or damaged while in your car. And your life insurance will pay out, regardless of how you meet your end.
To sum up
Before you rent a vehicle, check your auto and homeowners or renters policies to get an idea of what coverage you have while in the rented vehicle. And while at the rental car company, take some time to find out exactly what they offer. Compare those coverages to the ones you already have. That way, you can avoid buying coverage you don't need.

The Facts about Rental Car Insurance
If you're renting a car this spring,
you'll probably be asked to purchase an insurance package from the rental car
company. Even if you're fairly confident that you don't need the insurance,
an agent can sound awfully convincing. Don't be put on the spot. A little bit
of research could save you from making the mistake of buying coverage you don't
need or foregoing coverage that you should have.
The best way to protect yourself
In general, the best way
to protect yourself when using a rental car is to purchase a regular automobile
insurance policy that explicitly extends collision and comprehensive coverage
to rental cars in any state or country. If you don't own a car and you rent
on a regular basis, you might want to purchase a "nonowner" policy
that will give you the same type of coverage. Unless you have an individual
policy that explicitly extends coverage to rental cars, you should be cautious
if you wish to avoid exposure to liability when renting a car.
Doesn't my credit card issuer
automatically insure me when I rent a car?
Many major credit card
companies claim to provide you with insurance coverage when you use their card
to rent an automobile. However, you should read the fine print or get written
verification from the company, because the coverage provided by your credit
card is not always full coverage.
Some cards only offer coverage if
you rent your car from a particular agency. Some limit the days for which coverage
is available. Some will only provide coverage for certain types and/or classes
of cars. With some cards, the coverage is not automatic and you must enroll
in a program to get coverage. Some cards that advertise automatic rental insurance
really only reimburse you for the deductible that you would have to pay under
your regular insurance policy. Still others may provide only collision and comprehensive
coverage, leaving you exposed for personal injury or property damage to others.
This is not to say that all credit
cards fail to provide the coverage you need when you rent a car. It merely illustrates
that you shouldn't blindly rely on your credit card issuer to protect you. Carefully
examine the terms of your credit card agreement, then act accordingly
What about coverage offered by
the rental agency?
The insurance packages
that you purchase from a rental car agency (typically called "loss damage
waivers") may or may not provide the protection you need. In your rush
to get out of the airport, you may not realize that the loss damage waiver you
purchased insures the rental car against theft, but not the contents. That could
be a big surprise when your laptop computer and expensive camera are stolen
from the rental car along with your luggage, and the rental agency rejects your
claim (check your homeowners insurance policy in this case--you may be covered).
Similarly, you may discover that the loss damage waiver you purchased for liability
only provides limited coverage. Further, many loss damage waivers exclude certain
items and/or situations from coverage.
Again, this is not to say that rental
car agencies are unable to provide you with the protection you need. It is merely
to illustrate that you should read the fine print, or get verification from
an agent if you have any doubts.
What if I have a regular policy,
but it isn't full coverage?
It is possible that you
have insurance on your personal car, but you don't carry collision and comprehensive,
or sufficient liability coverage. It may not be necessary to call your agent
and add all that additional coverage just so that you will be protected when
you rent a car in Mexico during your upcoming vacation. You can probably close
the gaps in your coverage using loss damage waivers and coverage offered by
your credit card insurer. However, as discussed above, you need to be cautious.
You want to be sure you are getting the coverage you need.
Other sources of coverage
If you have suffered a
loss that isn't covered under your auto policy, don't forget to check your other
insurance policies. For example, if personal property has been stolen from your
rental car, it may be covered under your homeowners or renters policy. Similarly,
certain medical policies may cover costs of injuries not covered under your
regular automobile plan.

When you need a rental car for vacation or business,
it's a good idea to consider several factors while reserving to help

that are important. For example, what are their hours of operation?
Some smaller companies may close early on weekends.
Besides your rate, you should also consider the service you will receive when you get off the airplane,
how quickly you can obtain your rental car, the vehicle/model and its condition,
the convenience of returning your car rental, the hours of operation and the availability of emergency road service.
It is also important to be aware of the policies and restrictions of the different agencies.
Some agencies even allow cash rentals, debit cards and rentals to those 18-25 years of age. Consideration of all of these factors can
help make a large difference in your overall rental car experience.

Online Booking Tips
When booking online with major national car rental chains its helpful
to know the airport code for the airport you
will pickup at. These major
agencies have 100's of locations and 100's of rates at a given time and
you need to fill out their booking forms entirely to get a rate for your
trip. Knowing the airport code can be a shortcut to
your online rate and reservation.

Credit Card Coverage
Some UPPER level credit cards such as MasterCard Gold may be a source
for excess or secondary insurance for a car rental, but only if you use the same credit card
to rent the vehicle. Some upper level credit cards can be your primary
collision coverage in absence of any personal car collision insurance or
when you are traveling overseas, where your personal insurance will not apply. Typically, there is a dollar limit and/or vehicle type exclusions.
Since these policies vary greatly, call your credit card company to find out their policies for
car rentals. More information on subject.
My Total Bill
It can be confusing, but
be aware that when you are quoted a "base rental car rate" it does
not include rental coverages, sales taxes, airport taxes, airport/concession, vehicle license fees
and miscellaneous surcharges. A trend in some cities is to help finance new sports stadiums and other initiatives
by tacking on a surcharge. All of these additional charges can increase the base rate by 10-40% depending upon the airport location.
Note that our "Snap Shot Rates" or the "Rate Compare Guide"; do not include these extra charges.
Drop-Off Charges
An extra fee is usually charged if a car is returned to a different location than where it was picked up.
This fee varies on location so there usually is no general policy
regarding this. In some instances there is no charge, at others it can be
as high a $1500 if you drop the car off a long distance from where you picked it up at.
Reserve in Advance!
To get the best rate when applicable, reserve your car at a
weekly rate (a week is usually between 5-7 days)
instead of at a daily rate if possible, and reserve in advance. Check back
periodically to see if a better rate is available.
Rates are based in part on how many cars the agency has available
at your pick up location. Be responsible and cancel
your reservation if you have a change of plans.
Child Safety & Infant Seats are Usually Available
Most car companies offer child safety, toddler and infant seats. Since there may be limited availability
or these you should reserve these well in advance. Be aware that at some locations, the rental car company may not guarantee
that a child seat will be waiting for you upon arrival. They are usually $5-$6 per day to rent but can be anywhere from $2-$10 per day. Some agencies cap the charge at a maximum per rental.
Online Internet Discounts are Available
Many companies currently are offering online discounts on the internet. When reserving online, be sure to print out or take note of your confirmation information and take this with you to the counter.
Service is Important!
To get the best service, check your rental car companies website or inquire with them for what exactly they offer in the way of special services.
Do I Need to Buy their Coverages, Insurance or Damage
Waivers at the Counter?
Check to see if your personal or business car insurance
covers you in a rental car. This will save you worry and
money when they ask "Do you want coverage/insurance?".
Some upper level credit cards have rental car coverage, too. Your
personal or corporate auto insurance may cover Collision
Damage Waiver (CDW), Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) or Physical Damage Waiver (PDW). It may also cover
Personal Accident Insurance (PAI), Personal Effects Coverage (PEC)
and Additional Liability Insurance (ALI). Most of the time
these are optional coverages. "Loss Of Use" or "down time" coverage may be offered
at some locations but may be covered under CDW, LDW or PDW mentioned above.
These charges (income the car would have generated if it was available to be rented)
is an additional fee that might be accessed in the case of damage to your rental. Some companies require
that you show proof of insurance. Also be aware that
your personal insurance probably does not apply to
your rental car when traveling overseas. All this is somewhat complicated and at times
confusing because there are no industry standards for terminology and policies vary by locations.
See also Car Rental Coverages and
Fuel Options .
Beware of the 24 Hour Clock
When determining your car rental bill be aware of the "24 hour clock rate" most rental car companies use when charging you. This means if you rent your car on Wednesday and return it on Thursday, you are charged for one day only if you return it within 24 hrs. You are usually charged for 2 days if you return it more than 27-28 hrs after picking the car up. The policy for most companies is that an hourly rate is charged for the first 3-4 hrs after 24 hrs. Returning the car after the hourly rate period means a whole extra day is usually charged. Be aware that this procedure can vary from company to company and that some companies use a calendar day billing policy wherein you have until midnight to return your car before being billed for a full extra day.
Rates Vary Greatly at a Location!
Rental car rates can vary 50% or more across agencies at the same location. For example, in Tampa an economy car may rent for as low as $79/wk or as high as $149/wk on the same day. To get the best deal, reserve your car at least a WEEK in advance. The earlier the better! Rates can very greatly at busy locations. Destinations like Florida, Denver and Las Vegas are VERY COMPETITIVE with rates varying as much as 100%!
Company Rates Vary from Location to Location
Also keep in mind that rental car companies may vary their rates a great deal from city to city due to market forces. Rates for a little economy car at New York's La Guardia Airport may vary from $200-$349/wk!
You may be Required to Show your Airline Ticket
Be aware that some rental car agencies at the airport require that you show your airline ticket in order to receive your "discounted" airport rate. So if you need a rental car for only part of your trip it may not benefit you to go back to the airport to rent a car for the brief period you may need it. Your airline ticket may be required to show your flight arrival to be within 24 hours of rental car pickup at the airport for the lower rate.
Car Rental Rates can Change Quickly
For convenience, this guide includes "snap shots" of rates in at many major airports. Click your city of destination and go to "low rates". Bear in mind, these rates are only snap shots for reservations made on a given day and these rates usually change, If interested, see why rates change .
You can't Reserve a Specific Type Car
When you reserve, you are holding down a RATE, not necessarily a specific car. Write your CONFIRMATION number down where you will have it when you pick up your car.
You Might be Able to Upgrade!
If the rental car company is out of the class car you
reserved you might be able to UPGRADE at no additional
charge depending on what is available!
Remember you reserved a rate in which the car company is
obligated to. This can be risky though if
you actually need a bigger car than the one you
reserved.
Reserve with Weekly Rates Rather than Daily Rates
It is always best to stick with the dates and time period you have reserved. If you're not sure when you will be returning a
car because you may have to stay longer, it may be much better to reserve in advance for a longer time and return it early than pay the "premium daily rates"
for returning a car a few days late. Typically, you're not penalized for returning it early, however this is not true across the board.
Some companies may recalculate your rate based on current daily rates, which may be much higher than when you reserved.
Unlimited Mileage?
Most major rental car companies allow for unlimited MILEAGE in the same state, but it's a good idea to check their policy before confirming. Many smaller local independent companies charge mileage after 100-200 free miles per day.
Gasoline Charges
Be sure and fill your car up before you return your car.
In most cases you will pay a high premium if you forget.
See also FUEL-GAS OPTION PLANS below and
Insurance and Gas .
Taxes & Airport Surcharges
Vary from state to state, airport to airport and are additional expenses that can increase your overall bill substantially. "Off airport" car rentals may mean lower surcharges for you.
Minimum Age Policies will Differ
Besides needing a valid drivers license and credit card in the same
name, most large agencies require renters to be at least 25 years old.
Many smaller local companies as well as Alamo
have a minimum age of 21. See our Underage page for specific company listings.
Do I Need a Major Credit Card?
Yes, most rental car agencies accept only
major credit cards and do NOT accept debit cards
or cash. Alamo accepts
debit cards with the Visa or Mastercard logo only.
There are a few small independents that allow
cash deposits. With the use of a debt card,
the agency may require a credit check.
Get an Extra Key!
Many car companies will provide you with an EXTRA KEY if you ask for one. This can come in handy for some of us who are absent minded.
Check Out the Condition of your Car
It's a good idea to get out and inspect the vehicle with
the attendant for scratches, dents or other damage before you
take off. Any damage or unusual dents or scratches should be
noted on the contract before you leave the lot. Go back to the
rental office if need be to have this acknowledged in writing.
Some companies may enforce a hard line policy regarding this.
Look at a Map Before Taking Off
Be sure you get a MAP and look at it before you take off in your rental car. If you need to ask questions do so before you leave the agency. Take note of the location so you can easily return your car.
Fuel - Gas Option Plans
A "Fuel Purchase Option" or "Fuel Service Option" means you purchase an additional tank of gas at the
average market price when you pick up the car. This plan is only useful IF you
forget or do not have the time fill-up before returning to the airport since it will allow you to avoid paying the high fuel prices
you will be charged to fill the tank up. If you return the car near empty then you have really played this
option to perfection but, the truth is, how often will this actually occur?
Renting in Another Country
When renting a car in another country, your personal insurance coverage
probably will not extend to a car rental. In this case,
your best option is to buy the collision damage waiver from the
rental agency which may be expensive but very useful.
Can I Let Someone Else Drive the Rental Car?
In most cases, you will need to list additional drivers
on your contract at the time of pick up. Some
companies will allow your spouse to drive
at no additional cost, but check first.
If someone else drives the car without the rental car
agency's permission your contract maybe voided for
protection and even claims against your personal
insurance coverage.

Q: What about rental car insurance?
A: Hotwire's car rental rates do not include any insurance. However, you will be able to purchase insurance when you pick up the rental car. Prior to pick-up, please check with your insurance provider to determine whether or not your personal auto, homeowners or renter's policy covers car rentals. You may also want to check with your credit card company for possible insurance coverage on rental cars.
