History
and Background
Founded in 1980 by Jack L. Stephens, DVM, Veterinary Pet Insurance
(VPI) is the nation's oldest, largest and number-one licensed pet medical insurance
plan for dogs, cats, birds and other common exotic pets.
Based in California, VPI is available in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The VPI Superior Plan, VPI Standard Plan and Avian & Exotic Pet Plan are approved in 47 states. The remaining 3 states offer the Advantage Plus Plan and Gold Plan (pending department of insurance of approval to offer the new plans).
VPI is a privately-held company. Many of its shareholders are independent
veterinarians. Scottsdale Insurance Company, a subsidiary of Nationwide
Insurance, holds a majority interest in the company.
Since its inception, more than one million Veterinary Pet Insurance
policies have been issued, with a renewal rate of 82 percent.
The American Humane endorses VPI exclusively.
Policies in California are underwritten by Veterinary Pet Insurance
Co., Brea, California. Outside California, policies are underwritten
by National Casualty Company, an A+ 15 rated company, Madison, Wisconsin.
Purpose
and Mission
Founded to end economic euthanasia, Veterinary Pet Insurance is dedicated
to helping pet owners provide the best medical care for their pets.
Veterinary Pet Insurance's overall mission is to make the miracles
of veterinary medicine affordable for all pet owners.
Coverage
Policies cover more than 6,400 medical problems and conditions for
accidents and illnesses, with optional coverage available for preventive
and routine care.
Pet owners can visit any licensed veterinarian, veterinary specialist
or animal hospital in the world.
Veterinary Pet Insurance helps pay for office calls, prescriptions,
treatments, lab fees, x-rays, surgery and hospitalization for covered
medical problems.
Policies cover dogs and cats from six weeks of age and older. There
is no upper age limit. Rates for dogs and cats are based on the species,
age of the pet and the plan type selected. Birds are insured from three
months of age and older, and must be in the owner's possession for a
minimum of sixty days. Rates are based on the size of the bird. Rabbits
must be six weeks of age. Rates for rabbits and other exotic pets are based on size.
Industry
Currently, there are more than 53 million dogs and 60 million cats
in the U.S.
There more than 9,000 species of birds of which approximately 300
species are commonly kept as pets.
More than 60%of US households (58.2 million) own a cat or dog.
4.6 million households own birds.

- 24.9% own two birds;
- 7.8% own three birds;
- 13.9% own four or more.
More than 91% of pet owners take their dogs and cats into the veterinarian
for vaccinations and preventive care.

Avian care is increasing. In 1991, consumers spent $37.7 million on
veterinary medical expenditures for birds. By 1996, that number had
grown to $91.2 million.
