Counseling Seniors On Their Insurance Needs.
The Senior Health Insurance Counseling Program (SHICP) helps
inform the public about Medicare and other senior health insurance
issues. This division provides accurate and objective counseling,
assistance and advocacy relating to Medicare, Medicaid, Medicare
Supplements, Medicare+Choice, Long-Term Care and other related
health coverage plans for Medicare beneficiaries, their representatives,
or persons soon to be eligible for Medicare.
AUTHORITY AND FUNDING
The SHICP program is primarily funded by a Federal Grant from the Centers
for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to the Oklahoma Insurance
Department. The program has been in operation since 1992.
SHICP SERVICES
Consumer Education
Reaches a broad section of the population, both rural and
urban.
Presentations provide objective information about Medicare,
Medicare Supplement Insurance, Medicare+Choice, Long-Term Care
and other health insurance needs.
Provides public forums and other presentations to civic organizations,
senior citizen groups, retiree organizations and other groups.
Actively participates in the State Fair of Oklahoma, the
Tulsa State Fair, local, county and senior fairs, the Statewide
Aging Conference, the Oklahoma Minority Conference and in other
similar events.
Publishes free Shopper's Guides to aid in the decision-making
for Medicare Supplement Insurance and for Long Term Care Insurance.
Additionally, provides a wide variety of other free pamphlets
on Medicare, Medicare+Choice and other similar topics.
Counselor Training
The focus is to offer one-to-one free, confidential sessions
with certified-trained volunteer insurance counselors from the
SHICP program. Over 350 counselors are available statewide to
offer assistance.
Sessions provide an effective way to objectively approach
specific problems with sorting and filing Medicare and other
health insurance claims. Additionally, counselors can prepare
policy reviews, provide assistance and tips for shopping and
comparing insurance plans.
ACCESS TO COUNSELING AND ASSISTANCE
You may contact the Senior Health Insurance Counseling Program
at (800) 763-2828 or (405) 521-6628. The trained SHICP staff
will be able to answer your questions and, if necessary, provide
the appropriate referral to a Certified Insurance Counselor.
VOLUNTEER COUNSELING OPPORTUNITIES
Please contact our office if you would like to volunteer to
help senior citizens in your area with Medicare, Medicare+Choice,
Medicare Supplements, Long-Term Care, Medicaid and other health
insurance and enjoy assisting senior citizens in your area on
a volunteer basis. Counselors attend a three-day training course
that gives them the tools and on-going support system they need
to assist their fellow Oklahomans. There is no charge for this
course which is offered in several areas across the state. The
training is open to anyone interested in volunteer work and is
helpful to employees who work in the aging field. However, due
to strict federal guidelines, individuals who hold a license
to sell insurance in the State of Oklahoma cannot serve as SHICP
Volunteer Certified Insurance Counselor.
