Now you and your Medicare patients can afford to be serious about diabetes.
Diabetes is very serious , but
it is usually controllable. Encouraging patients to monitor their blood glucose can help
prevent or delay serious complications like blindness, amputations, and kidney failure.
New benefits now allow your Medicare patients with diabetes to prevent or delay diabetes
related complications by monitoring their blood glucose levels at minimal expense.
Beginning July 1, 1998 , Medicare will cover blood
glucose test strips, lancets, and meters for all enrollees with diabetes whether or not
insulin is used to control the disease. Please keep some details in mind when you
prescribe these treatments to your Medicare patients with diabetes.
In order for Medicare to cover these benefits, a physician must prescribe
blood glucose testing supplies and document on the prescription :
o The number of test strips to be dispensed,
o Whether or not the patient uses insulin,
o How often a patient should test their blood glucose
The benefits apply to people with either Medicare Part B or Medicare managed
care coverage.
Individual Medicare policies may define how many test strips and
lancets patients are entitled to each month.
Medicare coverage of blood glucose testing supplies is great news
for the 17 million people with diabetes in the United States. The American Diabetes
Association fought hard for this new coverage. Please encourage your Medicare patients
with diabetes to monitor their blood glucose to control their diabetes and reduce the risk
of complications.
Remember, diabetes is serious. Now you and your patients can
afford to be serious about diabetes.

What is health
insurance?
